Washington LEAD for Racial Justice Initiative
Legal Education. Advocacy. Defense.
Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part.
— Rep. John Lewis
our mission
The Legal Education, Advocacy, and Defense (LEAD) for Racial Justice Initiative provides relevant legal education and accessible resources to nonprofit organizations serving communities of color. The Initiative aims to help organizations navigate the current legal landscape, as they continue engaging in and supporting vital racial justice work.
If I fall, I’ll fall five feet four inches forward in the fight for freedom. I’m not backing off.

BIPOC ED Coalition is raising $1.2 million for 2025 to deliver the Washington LEAD for Racial Justice Initiative.
Given persistent risks, recent moves by the new administration, and the many legal actions unfolding in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling, there is a clear need for a multi-year initiative.
We anticipate raising an additional $1 million for 2026 and $1 million for 2027, subject to increase based on the current climate.
